Is Semax safe?

Emerging Research

Side effects, risks, and safety considerations based on available research.

Research status

Semax has some clinical data but research is still developing. Safety data exists but may come from small studies, short-term trials, or specific populations that may not reflect your situation.

Known concerns & side effects

  • ⚠not FDA-approved or recognized by Western regulatory agencies, though in July 2026 an FDA advisory committee (the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee) voted to recommend Semax for the 503A compounding bulks list — a step toward legitimate US compounding access, not yet finalized, and still not an FDA-approved drug
  • ⚠most clinical evidence is from Russian/Ukrainian research, often in small trials
  • ⚠Western-standard randomized controlled trials are lacking
  • ⚠long-term effects of sustained BDNF elevation are not fully understood
  • ⚠nasal spray formulation — compounded versions may vary in quality and concentration
  • ⚠not a proven treatment for ADHD despite community claims

Frequently asked questions

Can Semax treat ADHD?

Despite community claims, Semax is not a proven treatment for ADHD. While it may enhance focus and cognitive function through BDNF upregulation, no rigorous clinical trials have established it as an ADHD treatment. It should not be used as a substitute for proven ADHD medications without physician guidance.

Is Semax the same as ACTH?

No. Semax is a synthetic analog of a small fragment of ACTH (amino acids 4-10). Unlike full ACTH, Semax does not stimulate cortisol production from the adrenal glands. It retains the neurotrophic properties of the fragment without the hormonal side effects of ACTH.

Is Semax becoming legal in the US?

It may be moving in that direction, though nothing is final yet. In July 2026, an FDA advisory committee recommended adding Semax to the list of substances licensed compounding pharmacies may legally prepare — this would open up a regulated prescription pathway, but HHS has not yet acted on the recommendation. Semax remains an unapproved drug either way; it has not gone through FDA efficacy review.
